Divorce is considered one of the most difficult and traumatic life experiences you will ever go through. I’ve been there myself – divorce is painful, frightening, overwhelming, and most people feel a sense of shame, failure, loss and anger. Many of my clients come to me wanting to separate or divorce – or they learn that their spouses want to separate or divorce – and they are not prepared at all for this major upheaval.
I realized that what people need is a course that provides them with the basic tools so they can make informed decision about their legal options, how to get prepared, how to understand the critical legal issues that might impact them, and how to negotiate if they choose to mediate.
What you’ll learn in my divorce prep workshop:
- Are you both truly ready for divorce? Are you both on the same page? What to do if you’re not.
- What are your legal options – mediation, collaborative law, negotiated settlement or litigation – and the pros and cons of each.
- Understand NY Domestic Relations Law and what ‘equitable distribution’ really means.
- How are maintenance (alimony) and child support determined in NY?
- What documents to gather to prepare you for your separation and for your mediation or litigated divorce.
- The importance of understanding your household finances.
- How to negotiate openly and fairly.
