Coaching/Review Work
At various stages along the way, you may feel you need a coach or divorce professional to help you decide the best way to proceed when faced with the prospect of separation or divorce. You may want to consult with someone on the side who can help you frame the issues for your lawyer if you are engaged in a litigated divorce. If you’ve retained a mediator, you may need to consult with a lawyer who understands the mediation process who can review your draft Separation or Settlement Agreement to make sure your interests are protected and the terms are in line with current NY law.
Consider coaching for the following reasons:
- Pre-separation or pre-divorce coaching so you know how to best prepare for an inevitable break-up, or to explore your legal options;
- To discuss your budget and finances and to help you think about what life will look like after divorce;
- During the litigation process to help you brainstorm and think through your issues and frame your questions for your attorney without running their clock;
- Separation Agreement/Settlement Agreement review work to ensure that you’ve made the best decisions for you before signing the document;
- During the collaborative law process to help you think about the bigger picture, ask about solutions and develop proposals to bring to the negotiation table; or
- If you want to DIY your divorce and need a lawyer to review your documents before e-filing them or submitting them to the County Clerk for filing.
